We have to date 11 golf courses on the island of Mauritius, with the contribution of great Golf Designers. Most of which are international appreciation and built championship level courses. In addition to having the first golf course ever built in the Southern Hemisphere, to also hosting a course nominated the world’s best golf course 2016, each of our modern courses has been designed by great names of the game.
In Mauritius, the most historical of all golf courses is the Gymkhana Golf Club. Not only it is the first golf course built in the Southern Hemisphere, but it is also the fourth oldest golf course in the world. This 18-hole monument to golf was designed and built by the Royal Navy.
The Avalon Golf Estate, recently nominated for World’s Best New Golf Course 2016, as well as the Heritage Golf Course, Best Indian Ocean Golf Course 2016, were both designed by Peter Malkovich, who hails from Zimbabwe. A professional since 1968, he has played in Europe, Australia, and was part of the Sunshine Tour for more than ten years. To date, this talented designer and golfer has not less than 20 golf courses bearing his name around the globe.
Another world-class designer is Ernie Els, who designed the Four Seasons Golf Club. He is a four-time major champion winner, and member of the Golf Hall of Fame. The Ernie Els Design team has delivered to date 14 courses, with another 11 under development.
Hugh John Baiocchi
Mauritius is also privileged to have a Hugh John Baiocchi’s designed course, which is the Legend Golf Course. This exceptional designer was also a professional South African golfer, having played in different tournaments worldwide, and winning over twenty professional tournaments.
Peter Allis and Rodney Wright
Next is the Links Golf Course, often referred to as the smaller brother of the Legend Golf Course. This course was designed by Peter Allis and Rodney Wright. Peter Allis, a member of the Golf Hall of Fame since 2012, is an English Professional golfer who won 31 professional tournaments. He partnered with golf architect, Rodney Wright who had designed ten courses worldwide, to design this golf course. Rodney Wright also designed the Tamarina Golf Club, which is the only course on the island with an authentic African feel to it.
The only golf course, Le Paradis, built within a resort is located at Le Paradis Hotel. This stunning course was designed by the Zimbabwean, Tony Johnstone, who played on the South African Sunshine Tour, and also in England, with twenty professional tournament wins to his name.
The only 18-hole course located on an offshore island is the Ile aux Cerfs Golf Course. It was designed by the German former number one, Bernhard Langer, who had hundreds professional wins during his golf career.
The last, but not least, designer is the world famous South African, Gary Player. He designed one of the 9-hole courses, at Le Saint Géran Hotel in 1973. A member of the Golf Hall of Fame since 1974, this great name of the game has won over 150 professional tournaments over six continents. He has overseen three hundred design projects over the globe.
Each designer has made an exceptional effort to make each golf course unique. There is something for every passionate golfer, and for any handicap. Not only is a great game guaranteed but definitely the whole design and majestic views will leave the golfer awed at the variety on offer.
